This
classic Minnesota resort was purchased in 1948, by a fashion model
and professional photographer that decided they had enough of the
Chicago city life. They packed up their two year old son and
moved to a 2 cabin vacation property at the end of a two-rut
road in northern Minnesota.
Kohl's Resort is nestled
in the pine and birch of the Buena Vista State Forest on the
eastern shore of Big Turtle Lake, just 12 miles north of
Bemidji. It is recently noted as "one of the better multi
species lakes throughout the entire area" and "offers good
numbers of walleye and northern pike as well as some
respectable bass and pan-fish" as quoted in
OutdoorsWeekly.com. (Page 20, April 2012)
During
several decades, Helen and Bob Kohl developed this property
on Big Turtle Lake (one of a chain of 5 lakes) into one of
the areas finest resorts. In the late 70's, Rex and Kurt
Kohl took the resort over from their parents. They added new
Colorado style, 8 sided mini homes on the property along
with building a lodge with an indoor pool, sauna, Jacuzzi,
and laundry facilities.
Succeeding the Kohl's family
were a few owners that made changes along the way. In 2000,
Ron Mason of Iowa purchased the property and gave it a
proper facelift inside and out. Many changes came about. A
large family reunion 4 unit villa was built along with a
large family cabin. He remodeled the pool and built a much
loved outdoor hot tub.
In
2003, a new family moved to the area from Wisconsin Dells,
Wisconsin. Jim, Debbie, and their then - 12 year old son
Aaron Eickhorst. They are the current owners. Former
landscapers and campground owners has provided them the
experience to beautify this northern gem. They have worked
diligently on making sure the resort continues to operate as
a resort with deluxe guest accommodations. Having added four
cabins to the resort while remodeling all existing cabins,
the resort has continues to grow and beautify. Kohl's Resort
has the charm of a mom & pop place while providing guests
with the comforts and activities that larger resorts offer.
