A birding vacation can be yours, here at Kohls resort.
Welcome. We have a unique collection of habitat for our
feathered friends to call home. We are on the leading edge
of Minnesota's mixed woods. Pine forests,
deciduous woodlands, native tall grass areas, aspen, park
land, calcareous fens, boughs, marshes, large lakes and
small ponds, with creeks and rivers. The Continental Divide
is located eight miles to the north, pushing
the waters from here to the north and south.
Birds to look for at the resort:
Great Blue Heron, Cardinal, Oriole, we have 3 families of
Hummingbirds residing at the resort, 12 families of Loons
and 7 Eagle nests on the 3 lake chain. Peliated Woodpeckers
are always nearby and the Great Horned Owls spend some time
here in the winter. Also spotted at the resort are Woodcock,
Bobwhite, Pelicans, Swans, an Osprey nest nearby, and
species of Ducks and
Geese. Northern Goshawk; Ruffed Grouse; Spruce Grouse;
Northern Hawk, Great Gray and Boreal Owls; Black-billed
Cuckoo; Whip-poor-will; Three-toed and Black-backed
Woodpeckers; Alder Flycatcher; Boreal Chickadee; more than
20 species of nesting warblers including Golden-winged, Cape
May, Blackburnian, Pine, Bay-breasted, Connecticut and
Mourning; Pine and Evening Grosbeaks; Red and White-winged
Crossbills.
I know these guys don't have feathers, but there is a
chipmunk for every cabin along with some of our other local
friends. During the early spring and fall we are given a
burst of beaked buddies. Many of our Canadian neighbors fly
and feed here as the Mississippi River is considered a major
flyway for migratory birds. It is used by up to 40% of North
America's duck, goose, swan and eagle population. |
